Classes, Long Practices,
Lifelong Friendships
The team and social program only happened because a class Carol was supposed to teach, didn’t have enough students registered to carry the class. So Carol approached PE department Dean Dr. Tillman Hall and convinced him that Ballroom Dancing might be popular. From that meeting the USC Ballroom Dance team was born. The first year started with 3 students and by the following Fall Semester, it had grown to 44. The camaraderie was something special and over the next two years the team continued to grow.
Competitions, Shows, Sweat, Rewards!
Today, you can find a dance competition virtually every week within 100 miles. Back in 1975, competitions were basically the California Star Ball, and the Emerald Ball in L.A., Victor Dru’s in Las Vegas, the Glendale Amateur Ball, and the USBC in New York. So to get more than a few chances to taste performance dancing, shows for USC Homecoming football halftime, Kaleidescope, the first USC Invitational, filled the gaps. The routines consisted of Charleston, Jitterbug, Viennese, Hustle, Tango, and the big one – the 5 dance Latin Medley.
